Heads Up! Binance Got Hacked!
Somber news was released today afflicting an already somber cryptocurrency market. The popular exchange binance was hacked and users accounts were reportedly used to buy VIA. An official statement from Binance read:
We are aware of and investigating reports of some users having issues with their funds. All withdrawals are disabled while we investigate this, Please remain patient and we will provide an update as quickly as possible.
Two factor authentication did not seem to thwart the attackers. The hack currently appears to be related to API users, though at the moment it is unclear exactly what vector was used.
As always, some tips for keeping your account secure include enabling two factor authentication, choosing a passphrase rather than a password, and restricting apps from using the API. In general, only advanced users should enable the API. Purposes include building algorithmic trading bots, or monitoring systems for positions. We will keep you posted with updates about the attack.
